What Are Skin Tags

Skin tags are benign tumours that form mainly in areas of the body that crease easily, for example in the neck, groin or armpit. They are sometimes also to be found on the face, most often on the eyelids. Generally skin tags are harmless and painless, except if snagged on clothing, for example.

Usually skin tags are small, roughly the same size as a grain of rice and tend not to grow or change shape. The exact reason for their appearance has not been assertained although it is thought that they may be caused by skin rubbing against skin, due to the fact that they are most predominantly found in skin creases or folds.

Skin tags have been found to be more likely to occur in pregnant women and people who have a weight problem, both being factors that would be likely to see the chance of skin rubbing against skin. It has also been found that the occurence of skin tags is higher amongst women rather than men, although these finding may not be perfectly accurate due to the fact that obviously only women get pregnant.

Get Rid Of Skin Tags

Because skin tags are benign in nature there is no real need for treatment, the need to get rid of skin tags is mainly for cosmetic reasons, although tags that are likely to be frequently irritated can be a cause for removal. Usually the facial skin tags are considered a nuisance due to them being in proximity to the eyes, sometimes causing discomfort to spectacle wearers.

If skin tags are deemed necessary or desirable to be removed then a qualified person such as a dermatologist or doctor should be consulted with the view to having them removed surgically. It is not advisable to attempt to get rid of skin tags by yourself or by anyone else without first consulting someone who is qualified.

Removing skin tags is generally a simple enough procedure involving methods including cryosurgery, cauterization or even excision, all of which should only be carried out by a trained professional. attempting to remove skin tags yourself can lead to further, more serious complications, especially if you are foolhardy enough to try and cut the skin tags off. Doing so can, and most likely will, lead to infection, especially if the cutting impliment has not been properly disinfected.

There are over the counter products which are safe to use to get rid of skin tags, before using any such product you should first check the ingredients to ensure that there is nothing that you may be allergic to.
