What Are Moles
Moles are small skin lesions, they are usually dark brown but can be lighter, even skin coloured. The shape and size of moles can be varied, some can be raised, others can be flat, usually oval or circular in shape they can be smooth or rough to the touch and appearance, some also may have hairs growing from them. They can appear singularly or in clusters and can form on any part of the body.
Most moles tend to appear in early childhood or during the first 20 years of life, although it is not unusual for them to appear in later life.
You may note, if you suffer with moles, that the appearance of your mole has changed, sometimes they will become larger, while others may grow smaller and actually fall off without you realising they have gone.
Generally moles are a genetic condition, although not in every case, and it has been noted that they can in fact be inherited from the parents. It has also been found that spending a lot of time in the sun can increase the number of moles, although they should not be mistaken for sun spots, small brown spots, which also occur from too much sun.
Moles are mostly harmless, but in some instances they can in fact turn into a malignant melanoma, which is a type of skin cancer that is very aggressive in nature. Of all the skin cancers, the malignant melanoma is the most serious of all.
While moles themselves are not a sure sign of cancer, it is advisable to keep an eye on them and consult your doctor if you see significant changes is the size or shape of your mole.
Most people who suffer with moles find that they are more annoying than painful, especially so in women who may have them occur on their face, unfortunately having a mole surgically removed is most likely to leave scarring in place of the mole.
