What Is Psoriasis

The cause of psoriasis has not been exactly determined, research has indicated that one possible cause may be from a disorder of the immune system. Normally the immune system creates the white blood cells that help protect the body from infection. Some of these white blood cells, known as T cells, cause an inflamation in the skin and an abnormal rate of skin cell growth.

These growths tend to cluster together in patches on the skin surface, usually the most commonly affected areas are the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back. Generally a psoriasis outbreak is limited to a relatively small area but more severe attacks can cover much larger areas of the body.

Psoriasis can appear to have healed only for it to reappear, unannaounced, throughout the sufferers life. Although psoriasis is not a contagious infection that can be passed on, it can be a hereditary condition in as much that several members of the same family can suffer from the condtion.

Generally psoriasis appears in late teens or early adulthood, usually the first signs are small, red bumps which gradually get bigger and take on a scaly appearance. these scaly areas become itchy but if scratched tend to bleed.

There is no set pattern to the frequency of psoriasis outbreaks, nor to the severity of the outbreak, the symptoms vary greatly with each sufferer. It is thought that emotional stress or other skin injuries can trigger an outbreak.

There are several methods of treatment for psoriasis although which one would be most suitable for you would have to be determined by your doctor. Some of the most common methods of treatment are steroid creams and moisturisers.

As with most skin complaints, it is always advisable to seek advice from a dermatologist or doctor, they will be able to recommend the best course of action for you to take. There are over the counter solutions available from your chemist but the more effective treatments will no doubt be those prescribed by your doctor.
